Discovering Connection: Insights from a Journey to Uluru
Apr 13, 2026
Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to take my daughter on a trip to the heart of Australia, where we visited the stunning Uluru and immersed ourselves in the rich culture of the First Nations communities.
As we strolled around Uluru, I was amazed by my daughter’s knowledge. She eagerly pointed out various birds, plants, and shared fascinating stories about how the First Nations people lived, ate, and practiced their ceremonies. I was truly surprised by how much she knew about Australian wildlife and botany. This trip became a wonderful opportunity to connect with her on a deeper level, just the two of us, free from distractions.
What I didn’t anticipate was the flood of insights I would gain about my own relationship with my mother.
Have you ever felt as though your mother never truly recognized who you were as a child? Did you have to suppress parts of yourself to feel connected to her? If you’ve experienced this, you may be familiar with what’s known as the “mother wound.”
The mother wound creates a disconnection from ourselves, often leading to a similar disconnect with our own children. It can compel us to mold our identities based on our mothers’ expectations, rather than embracing our authentic selves.
The truth is, you cannot connect with your children on a deeper level without first validating your own unmet needs. These needs revolve around being loved for who you are, not for your behavior, your academic performance, or your ability to conform. Children need to feel, at a visceral level, that they are loved unconditionally.
As parents, it is our responsibility to truly understand our children: to explore what they love, what brings them joy, and what makes them unique. We must take the time to sit with them, ask questions about their world, and listen deeply. Your children need to sense the calm of your nervous system, allowing them to feel safe to connect to you.
This journey to Uluru was not just about exploring a beautiful landscape; it was a profound reminder of the importance of connection both with ourselves and those we love.
